Growing Hub

At this time of year it's great to take a moment to reflect on how things have gone so far and the end of our Summer Drop-in sessions has given us time to do that. It really has been amazing hearing about what you have been doing with your free seeds and free seed tatties and it has been such a privilege hearing inspiring stories about the difference this project has made.

None of this would have been possible without the good folk of One Seed Forward who raised the funds to make this happen, and who work tirelessly for projects like this. We always have leaflets and posters at our drop-ins explaining what they do but we're feeling such a rosy glow at how life-affirming this project has been and we wanted to take a moment to share the love here too.

We're back out on the road this week with some late summer and into-winter seeds at Fraserburgh Library. You'll find us there on Thursday 27th August 10.30 to 1pm and there's no need to book as you can just come along. We'd love to hear how your growing year has been going. This lovely late summer weather is a perfect time for harvesting but you could also be getting a few things in the ground for early spring and over-winter harvests.

At our drop-ins we've been handing out seeds for spring cabbage, kale, chard, perpetual spinach, rocket and radishes. These will ease the way into winter and you could even have something for the spring.

Fraserburgh is the last of our summer drop ins but we'll be back in the autumn with free onion sets so that your veg patch is not empty over the winter!

We've been out on the road with our Aberdeenshire Libraries drop-in sessions and it's been so inspiring hearing how you've all been getting on with your seeds and seed tatties.

The weather has certainly been a challenge this year and I'm afraid that my own crops have really struggled. It was hot and dry at the start of the season, then we had a cold snap, and we're now in a hot phase following a wet summer! The one thing you predict about Aberdeenshire weather is that it's unpredictable.

Well done to everyone who has managed to keep going in these conditions. If this was your first year of growing veg you deserve a huge pat on the back if you have harvested things because it has been very hard work for seasoned growers too!

We're getting ready to head back out on the road again - kicking off at Portlethen Library on Monday 27th July. We'll be there from 10.30 to 12.30 and we'd love to hear how you're doing with your veg growing. We'll be bringing our usual tips and guidance and we also hope to have some extra free seeds for summer sowing to grow into winter.
