Aberdeenshire Libraries Seed Bank chat - so much rain!

This weather really has been something and Plot 9 has taken a beating. My poor little seedlings have really been bashed by some of these downpours and they’re looking a bit worse for wear. They are mostly big enough to recover so I’m going to hold my nerve and hope for the best. You can offer your seedlings some protection if you feel they are struggling. Netting can be good for this but be careful that it is letting the water through rather than creating a heavy build up of water above your delicate little plants.

I had to take extra steps on my balcony this week to make sure the potted plants weren’t getting waterlogged. Some of my pots were sitting on flat surfaces and that isn‘t usually a problem but this week they looked like they were sitting in puddles. To help with drainage you can pop your pots on soil or gravel but not all of us have access to that. I find that just popping a few sticks under the pot can lift it enough to help with drainage. If the pot is too heavy to lift completely I just lift a corner and wedge a stick underneath and that‘s enough to help it drain.

I did have to walk down and water my polytunnel plants at the plot today and it‘s still warm and those guys need water too.

The weather looks set like this for a few days so why not stick out a couple of buckets and catch some extra rainwater. This cooler weather is also perfect for sowing lettuces too.

Always good to look on the bright side!

We have our last Spring into Summer drop-in session on Thursday 4th June at Fraserburgh Library (10.30 to 1pm) so please do come by and let us know how you're getting on, and see if there's anything else you might want to grow!
