Aberdeenshire Libraries Seed Banks - drop in updates

It's been great being out and about meeting people who have been using the new library seed banks. So many of you dropping by for more seeds and to let us know how you're getting on. It really is so fantastic hearing about all the things you've been growing and we're glad we've been able to help out with extra tips and guidance along the way.

One of the most frequent comments has been from folk saying how rewarding it's been having a bonding experience over growing veg with the younger and older family members. It seems that access to free seeds has allowed generations to really come together with purposeful outdoor time. I had a wonderful conversation with a woman who said that she had been growing veg with her father. He suffers from dementia and she said that he always had a wonderful veg plot but had stopped growing things as he felt it was too much for him. This year they are growing veg again because she saw the free seed bank and thought he might like to give it a try together. The experience has brought up lots of deeply embedded memories for him and he's coming up with all sorts of gardening guidance for their new venture.

Another thing that I've heard a lot is how parents are growing veg for the first time with their weans and they are learning together. I love that thought of such a level playing fields as adults learn something new alongside their little 'uns!

We have our last Spring-into-Summer drop in at Fraserburgh Library on June 4th but watch this space (and our socials) for dates for the Late Summer and Autumn drop-in sessions.

As for seeds... it's not to late to get stuff in the ground. This colder weather is perfect for sowing some lettuce and you can still get peas, beans, beets, and carrots sown too. No need to bring them on as seedlings as you can just get them straight in the ground.

Happy growing - and here is a fun activity to grow a beanstalk at home*
